Tourism Cabinet Secretary, Najib Balala, has said he will not vie for any electoral post in 2017 and he will instead be campaigning for President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election.
In an interview with Citizen TV on Sunday, Balala said he will be campaigning for the Jubilee Party in the next General Election to show support for what the Jubilee administration has done for Kenyans since 2013.
"I want to make it very clear. I'm not running for any elective position in the next election. But nothing is going to stop me from talking politics or doing politics. The law and the constitution is very clear because it says I should not as a minister hold an elective position in parliament, I should play party politics. So being a minister, I am delivering government manifesto, which is not politics,” Balala said.
However, Balala said he will not support party politics or individual politicians in the election, but will stick by Jubilee as a party, by supporting all those vying for various posts in different parts of the country as a united Jubilee Party.
"I will be supporting Jubilee as a party and not as an individual or nominations because I do not want to engage in party politics,” said Balala who is also the former Mvita MP.
Balala’s entry into politics will be a pain in the ass for Mombasa Governor, Ali Hassan Joho, who has often been quoted saying he is the Coast political kingpin and all Coastal leaders must oppose the Jubilee Government.
